HeadShotBassoonist Brenda Balazs-Reylek, currently of Garner, NC, is an active performer throughout the state and New York. Originally from North Carolina, Brenda attended the North Carolina School of the Arts, where she earned her Bachelor’s and Master of Music degrees. She also earned a number of awards and scholarships, including the Fletcher Opera Orchestra Scholarship, the Lowy Scholarship, the Mary D.B.T. & James H. Semans Scholarships, and the Music Dean’s Grant. She served as a Teacher’s Assistant for 2 years during her graduate studies.

Brenda has been playing the bassoon since 2001 and has studied under such fine musicians as Mark Popkin, Amber Ferenz, Marc Goldberg, and John Heard. She has attended several Glickman-Popkin bassoon camps and annual IDRS conferences, where she has studied and performed with many leading double-reed musicians.

In addition to playing with the West Islip Symphony and the North Shore Symphony Orchestra, Brenda has performed with the Winston-Salem Symphony, the Piedmont Opera Theatre, and many other organizations; often as a featured soloist.

In addition to performing, Brenda is also a private music teacher. Under her tutelage, her students do well at NYSSMA, achieving “Excellent” scores. Brenda teaches bassoon, clarinet and piano.

Brenda lives with her husband, Kevin and her cat, Taco.
